Opening for Hooton Tennis Club on the night were local band Oddity Road, who recently had a WYM Song of the day for their song ‘You’, which was one of the highlights of their set for me. Very energetic, great live and looking like they were very happy to be playing, the band were a great way to kick things off.
Next on the bill were Sweat. I found their set to be quite hit-and-miss, with some songs quickly becoming boring but others being enjoyable. The keyboardist in the group was brilliant though.
Having enjoyed Hooton Tennis Club’s debut album, and then liking their recent release ‘Big Box of Chocolates’ even more, I was very much looking forward to their show.
Playing a selection of tracks from their new album as well as their debut, the band gave the (undeservedly small) crowd at the Leadmill a great show. Katy Anne Bellis, another recent WYM song of the day, was a high point of their set, but there weren’t many low points. Other new album tracks like ‘Sit Like Ravi’ and ‘Bootcut Jimmy The G’ slotted in seamlessly alongside older tracks like ‘Jasper’ and ‘Kathleen Sat On The Arm Of Her Favourite Chair.’
HTC finished off their set with ‘P.O.W.E.R.F.U.L P.I.E.R.R.E’, the first song I ever heard from the band. Hopefully it won’t be the last one of theirs I see live.
