Track Review: Billie Eilish – Everything I Wanted

This is the first single that Billie Eilish has released since her incredibly successful and critically acclaimed debut album back in March. As with all of her other work to date, ‘everything i wanted’ is co-written and produced by Billie and her brother Finneas, with this time the duo penning the track on the road.

You may think that due to the success of her mega-hit ‘Bad Guy’, Billie would be tempted to follow it up with a similarly upbeat banger, however this new track is a gentle, melancholy tune about the price of fame and the toll that has had on her, as well as it being a tribute to her brother and how he as consistently been there for her through her rapid rise. The sad but hopeful melody reminds me of X&Y era Coldplay but nowhere near as overblown or cheesy.

The brilliant, unique production of her debut album was one of the things that made it stand out, and thankfully that level of quality has carried on here; the more times you listen to it the more little layers of instrumentation you notice. Billie’s brilliant lyricism and hypnotising voice are as strong as always here and as always, and at the heart of it all is a brilliantly written song. Having managed to make such a sad sounding song so catchy, ‘everything i wanted’ is pretty much the definition of a ‘sad bop.’
